HERvotes is a collaborative effort of over 50 women’s groups working together to mobilize women voters in 2012 around preserving women’s Health and Economic Rights – the HER in HERvotes.
HERvotes was formed to:
- Stop the attacks on historic advances for women;
- Preserve successful policies, such as the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act;
- Respect and highlight women’s contributions to the economy; and
- Act on policies to improve the job market for women and promote livable wages and equal pay for our families’ economic security.
This multi-organizational effort works to make sure women’s voices are heard on a broader agenda of health, economic security, and equal rights. HERvotes works to educate and mobilize women so that discussions of our nation’s future respect the growing power of women in the United States and reflect our concerns.
Women now comprise half of the entire paid labor force, and are essential contributors to the economy, both as workers and consumers. Women are also an increasingly powerful political force. According to the Center for American Women in Politics, women had a higher turnout rate in 2008 than men, with 60.4 percent of women voting compared to 55.7 percent of men. This gender gap is present across all ages and races.
